2021 - 1st year of gardening

This year I tried growing in the garden for the first time. Some old people gave me tomato seedlings to start with, and I got hundreds of toms from them. Along with using comfrey plants, which you soak in water for weeks until they smell like death, to use as liquid feed. Maybe they would have grown larger with a more consistent feeding routine, Since a lot would ripen pretty small. The broccoli and brussels were growing well until they got owned by cabbage white butterflies and their babies, so instead of allowing them to win, I decided we all lose, and ripped them all out. Need to set up netting next year.

broad/runner beans, were just for the aesthetic and a bit of shade. They don’t taste very nice imo but the bees liked them.

potatoes, I stupidly grew in the small raised bed rather than the large patch of dirt. they grew fine but the limited space of the bed was wasted on potatoes.

Also some different types of chilis. we don’t have the best climate for them here, or the best indoor position. but a few grew. they’re only turning red now, and the even later ones are still green sadly. I left them in the seed trays for too long and I think their growth got stunted. lastly, radish, the red ones. they were pretty bland but grew into fatties.

the only things I actually wanted to grow was garlic(wild) & onion. but it suddenly became too late and there wasn’t really space left.

I heard you need to grow legumes or leave the soil after a certain number of growths, though with limited space I wouldn’t mind just replacing the depleted bed soil with another bag to continue growing what I wanted.

anyways, gardening is epic and I finally understand being excited for the spring/summer
