midsummer
the tomatos were planted a bit early so they got far too big for their pots before it was warm enough to leave them outside/greenhouse. so i repotted them into deep troughs, planted all the way to the bottom. then they were carried in and out from the larger windowsil for a couple more weeks. the melons went out in buckets with them and are growing fine, no fruit only flowers. 2 different varieties, maybe 3 if i repot the smallest ones. although its a bit late now.
first early potatos are up, though i wish i grew maincrops instead.
carrots are all up, some store-bought parsely between them.
butternut squashes were put out. just the main one at first (last yrs, hawk), then one of the two later (waltham) but they have remained pretty small. i didnt realise at first. but over time the largest leaves died. theres a big difference between the outside waltham and the spare i left on the windowsil in terms of size. so i planted that spare in a bucket and put in the greenhouse to see how big itll get.
spinach came up after ages of waiting. then exploded really quickly. now its gone because it bolted.
onions i split in two, white and red. on each half of a bed. then realised i had more space. so grew more in seed trays, then forgot which side was which. a neighbor also gave me a tray of pregrown onions i squeezed in next to them.
leeks also in the onion bed, and like the onions. i realised there was enough space for more, so started growing them in the greenhouse in trays. but forgot which was which. so i didnt bother planting any of them. i put more seeds in the bed directly and theyve begun growing. not sure if theres enough time for them to grow.
peas originally grown in a drainpipe in greenhouse. theyre all about 3ft or more. theres a clear difference between varieties as the older ones are much shorter and already have flowers, but none of the telephone peas have flowers yet. i directly sowed another 2 rows beside the current peas as well.
dwarf beans and peas. the beans originally 99% failed. so i ended up throwing them all in. they are from last year and probably werent stored well. but theyre up now. the dwarf peas are up with them. looking identical to small regular peas.
beetroot beside the dwarves is thickly sowed. probably bad. they havent begun growing large yet, the leaves have but nothing underground from the few ive thinned
cabbages green and later red, 6 of each in a 2ftx2ft(ish) square. way too many. had no idea how large a cabbage would grow. the reds were store-bought and planted from a tray. theyre taller and more woody. the greens are so wide and overlap each other.
extra bed was empty for a while. i was going to save it for late summer mustard greens. but ended up using it for huazontle. extra lettuce, pumpkins and mizuna
flowers: most got destroyed by slugs and snails. even those that survived and were growing large. :(
i dont remember what else.
this year has been pretty bad. the snails and slugs destroyed a lot. the compost has been dry and not so good. the weather has been the worst. it felt like summer only just begun with june, in a temperature sense. it was cold all the way to the end of may. and compared to this time last year. everything is smaller, except for things i grew far earlier. maybe the last few years have been luck, or this year may be unlucky.
