2023 - 3rd year of gardening

i was going to post my yearly blogpost but i can’t write well and i ramble too much, so hopefully this will be more succinct

BAD STUFF this summer sucked. there was almost no sun.

i made a garden tracker app for my phone/personal blog and then changed the server it was hosted on so the IP changed and i cbb editing the app anymore so i didnt use it much. it tracked most planting dates at least

like half of the carrots ended up flowering for some reason.

most of the fancy flower seeds got choked out by the wildflowers i planted with them.

sunflowers 50% germination from saved seeds. then 50% of all sunflowers (bought more) got destroyed by snails.

butternut squashes all grew so well, but the fruits either died small or rotted, now i have a raised bed full of leaves and vines.

expensive potted dahlias i bought were beautiful, but within a week the rain and wind obliterated them and they never recovered.

cabbages were faaar too crowded. i planted them expecting small round balls. but they were like 3x larger and their outer leaves open out. where i planted 6 should have been 1. peas also too crowded. they grew much larger than i expected.

my blueberry bushes and potatos were destroyed by a weed wacker.

elephant garlic looked really good, but after picking and letting cure for a week or two, it was the most disgusting chemically tasting blech. really horrible. no idea why. the other garlics were fine. the burning taste lasted for an hour at least. not touching those again. the flavor is supposed to be mild too…

GOOD i finally successfully air layered my acer tree! i cant believe it actually rooted theres no guarantee it will survive, since theyre usually grafted onto stronger rootstocks, but i was so happy about that. Its in a large pot now.

melons grew too. last year i almost grew one but it fell off the vine when it was tiny. this year i grew one yellow melon and 2 watermelons. this was from 6 plants. i live in a cold climate so this was cool too. unsure if they cross pollinate or not so it’s probably not worth saving seeds? maybe as an experiment, if they did cross. idk.

pumpkins grew. last year the frost killed them juuust before they were ready. so its cool to have one I can at least carve for h’ween. the bottom didnt fully heal on one and it rotted i thnk. the other probably has a dead slug in it too.. still just happy it grew.

i dug a big circular flowerbed and just made a nice pattern with cheap petunias, osteospermums and others which filled out really well once things grew. All the old ladies loved it and kept comlpimenting it when they walked by.

the leeks and onions grew really well too. i was even too cautious with spacing the leeks apart. they got used well in soups.

cherry tree made its first fruit. the flowers have always died or been blown off. but I got 3 cherries from it this year.

i made some elderflower cordial which was even better than store bought. looked around the countryside for an elder and a neighbor had one right there and let me use it. id never even noticed before.

This year I was too eager in planting things too early, they either became leggy and died, or were too large before it was warm enough and i had to carry them in and out every day in giant pots. The lack of sun made it boring. watching the garden look flooded every day. never getting to water things myself. took the fun out of it a bit.

sorry i rambled too much again
