Summer begins
2024-5-1

OK. its finally getting warm. things that happened

only the yellow onions didnt germinate.

literally only like 2 did out of dozens. (un)surprising discovery, as ive read online that onion seeds only really last 1 year. so i wasn’t optimistic. but every single red onion and leek seed germinated. i planted them out yesterday. kind of interesting. i was going to try out onion “sets” if these didnt work out. but i just filled the bed with leeks and red onions this time instead. last year it was 1/2 leek, 1/4 red 1/4 yellow. so i dont even have space to try out sets now anyways.
oh and >>6 i forgot about this again. it didnt harm them last year though.

planted 10 rasps, 5 of 2 kinds of varieties.

right before i bought rasp canes, i learned about primocane vs floricane.

primocanefloricane
fruit in late summer or autumnfruit in their 2nd year

i wanted primocanes to get something out of this year, and i dont know how much longer ill be here.
but when i got to the plant shop i totally forgot which was which, and they don’t use the same terminology or make any mention of it at all really anyway. so i ended up getting one of each by chance. there was some posts that said floricanes taste better than primos, but i suppose it doesn’t matter now that i have both. I used some old scrap wood to build two supports on each end of the bed

saved sunflowers 2nd year

this is year 2 of my saved sunflowers. only around 50% germinated last year, and most of them were destroyed by slugs. this year i put them into a plastic container and lightly covered the lid to keep the heat and moisture in. and a bunch have come up. ill plant them soon

no tomatos

>>8 i didnt even plant tomatos this year, this is the first year i havent grown any. maybe ill buy some pregrown ones later.. but i want to maximize my melon harvest instead. melons are all saved seeds btw. im convinced by online info that the 2 melons i grew last year dont cross, so these seeds should be fine.

shed thing

got a big plastic garden box. flimsy SH*T but it works for now. not sure how long itll last until it gets brittle or blows away in the wind. it had to be done to store the junk the greenhouse was hoarding over winter.

gutter peas

such a good idea. they can sit up high in the greenhouse and wait until the peas are all grown tall enough to plant outside. maybe 8 inches or so. mine got a bit too big in there because im always too eager to plant things early. also there may be too many. they arent all hooking onto the twigs, so if half flop over and die its fine. survival of the fittest.

potato

also planted some maris piper potatos i have peas up against the fence, then potatos infront of them.
its quite narrow so its an experiment to see if they both thrive.

FAIL

3rd? year in a row ive tried planting rosso pepper. in this climate they need to be planted SOOOO early. but i left it too late, so theyre tiny seedlings right now. whatever. im going to see how big they get and try figure out how early to plant them next time. 4th(?) times a charm
