warm days

A few days ago I made a couple of new mini beds, ground level, the same as the original square from last year. I used some scrap wood to keep the grass out. The design is really bad because the grass spills over as it grows, and slugs live behind the wood.

There were lots of slugs..

But Ive tried surrounding the edges with dirt to hopefully kill the grass and make it more inhospitable.

Yesterday i transplanted the lettuce (red iceberg) and cabbage (summer acre) into a small bed. They were getting far too big for the seed trays. The roots had begun spiraling so its good they got out of there. The cabbage looks pretty good, but the lettuce is weak and flimsy.

Today I planted some beetroots (detroit) and dwarf french bean (opera). I also finished a loose square bed using mini border fence panels. I swear a year or two ago when I got these they were only a fraction of the price. Theyre cheap trash and fall apart and dont even stay in the ground if the wind blows them wrong. But I sprinkled, california poppies, normal poppies, african lily, and cornflowers & crown daisies I saved from last year. Since I used most of those extra flower seeds all at once, I covered them with fleece incase a late frost comes.

I also planted some of my mixed sunflowers. The seed saved ones from last year were planted a week or so ago and theyre covered in the greenhouse. But I cant water them properly because a gutterpipe full of peas rests ontop of them.

The packet for the mixed sunflowers claim theyll grow to 6ft, which is a shame. I already have giant ones growing. If they were small or medium it could have filled the gaps between the large ones.
